Skin Consultation: A Skincare Routine Without SPF Is Pointless

Skin Consultation is a series, on Reena’s Edit, all about skincare. We will cover product recommendations, daily routines, proper skin care, and the newest research for bettering your skin. Taking care of your skin is more important than covering it up.

Why Is Wearing SPF Essential To Your Skincare Routine?

Sunscreen protects your skin from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. One of them is UVA rays, which are associated with skin aging. They cause fine lines, wrinkles, and aging spots. Without wearing sunscreen every day, you are exposing your sensitive skin to unnecessary damage from sun exposure.

After years of not wearing SPF (even on cloudy days), we try to renew our skin with anti-aging creams. But the root of the problem is a lack of protection to your face. Sunscreen can be found in many moisturizers  aim for SPF 50, although dermatologists recommend applying a moisturizer and sunscreen separately. They suggest using sunscreen as the last step in your morning skincare routine before makeup. Overall, it reduces the appearance of sun damage like discoloration, wrinkles, sagging, and leathery skin.
The face — whether dry, oily, sensitive, or normal, needs its own skin routine. Skincare products have their own purposes and we use them based on our needs.  Depending on your skin type, here is the outline of what products you should be using in your routines. We have also put together a FREE PDF Guide for a personalized skincare routine. If you don’t protect your skin with SPF, it doesn’t matter how many anti-aging creams you use.

Dr. Tabasum Mir says, “If you don’t protect your skin with SPF, it doesn’t matter how many anti-aging creams you use.”

It’s essential to have a skincare routine established in your early 20s. When your skin slowly starts to lose collagen, incorporate anti-aging skincare products daily. Don’t forget the sunscreen, though, so your skincare routine is not done in vain.

Even if you are indoors all day  sunlight comes in through your window! You can opt for a lower SPF for those days  10 or 15. There are many SPF facial mists now for a lighter feel even.

Importance of SPF In Your Routine:

1. Protection from Unnecessary Sun Damage
2. Keeps Complexion Even – sun damage causes uneven skin tones
3. Helps to Protect Against Visible Signs of Skin Aging  sunlight can increase the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
4. Healthy skin  sunscreen protects vital proteins like keratin to keep skin healthy and smooth
5. Reduces Risk of Skin Cancer
